One of the simplest things I sew are what I refer to as slim card holders.

Examples of slim card holders

This is how I make it. For materials, I need four pieces of fabric:

  • Two pieces of 4.5 x 5 inches for the pockets
  • One piece of 4.5 x 6 inches for the interior
  • One piece of 4.5 x 6 for the exterior.

If this will be used for credit cards, I highly recommend a piece of RFID blocking fabric just slightly larger than 4 x 5.5 inches.

Materials for slim card holder

First, take the interior pocket fabric pieces and fold the long side of each to create a two layered piece of 4.5 x 2.5 inches. Iron the folded pieces, then top stitch to keep the fold.

Fabric for pockets have been folded in half, ironed, and top stitched

Then just layer the pieces, place the interior fabric good side up. Next place the two pockets with top-stitched sides facing each other. [After the fact, I realized I should have taken a photo at this point to show how I placed them. Please see the below video for clarification.] Then place the exterior fabric good side down. Finally place the RFID blocking fabric on top. Use fabric clips to hold in place.

All pieces ready for sewing. Materials are layered with interior fabric and pockets placed good side up, then exterior fabric good side down, then the RFID blocking fabric.

Stitch around the perimeter with a quarter inch seam leaving a small opening to turn it right side out.

Trim the corners to reduce bulk once it has been turned good side out.

Finally turn it right side out.

Sewn fabric pulled through opening, so good side is out.

Finally, sew the opening closed and iron flat. Then it is finished.

I also made a video to further explain how I make them.
